Description
Forget the old “Nova means no-go” joke—this 1972 Chevrolet Nova SS is anything but slow. This aggressive Pro Street build dates back to the ’90s and was even featured at the AutoRama. Underneath the sleek, classic Nova body lies a serious powerhouse: a built 540ci V8 that pumps out a staggering 735 horsepower through a competition-built TH400 automatic transmission.
Despite its high-performance credentials, the exterior remains subtle and tasteful. Finished in deep dark blue metallic paint with thin red and bright blue pinstripes accenting the trunk lid and rocker panels, the classic Nova lines are clean and mostly uninterrupted. The only hints at the car’s monstrous power are the short spoiler on the trunk and the wide aftermarket wheels and tires peeking from the tubbed rear fenders. The paint, chrome, and trim have aged gracefully with a glossy depth that’s hard to look away from.
Inside, the car is built for speed. A sturdy roll cage is integrated discreetly behind the bucket seats, and a host of AutoMeter gauges keep constant tabs on vital engine functions. The Cheetah SCS shifter makes gear changes slick and effortless.
The engine build is as serious as it gets. Highlights include a Dart “Big M” block, ZL1 aluminum heads, forged Scat crank and pistons, solid roller cam with Crane Cam roller rockers, an 11:1 compression ratio, Team G Dominator intake, 850 cfm Demon carburetor, MSD ignition, and Hooker SuperComp headers. The transmission is competition-built with a reverse-mounted valve body, deep pan, and trans brake, while a Dana 60 rear end with 4.30:1 gears delivers power to massive 31x18.5x15 Mickey Thompson tires.
If you’re after a Nova that combines classic style with jaw-dropping performance and a burn-rubber attitude, this Pro Street SS is your ticket. It’s a thrilling, turn-key ride that demands attention and delivers excitement.
